HDD case study shoot: Parklands

Continuing the ongoing project to photograph the client, TruLine Civil’s range of work methodologies and then follow through by writing them up as Case Studies on their website. I was contracted to document the span of a day on location in Akaroa. The brief is to record a fine-grained record of TLC’s capability in the relatively new Civil Engineering field of “Trenchless Technology”, in this case specifically Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). This fast and highly accurate “Horizontal Infrastructure” laying technique is achieved by way of a synchronised deployment of highly skilled and experienced operators, high tech machinery and tight coordination between the project team members. From skilled labourers and drivers up the chain to the site engineer—close communication is maintained between the project team members via modern telecommunications.

Print craft: Top tips for print on uncoated stock

Production-for-Graphic-DesignersWhile graphic design and pre-press have been digital since the turn of the century, the physics and chemistry of ink on paper for offset printing remains constant, completely unaffected by the shift to digital design. One of my favourite Graphic Art Production books, Production for Graphic Designers (5th Edition) has a very useful entry on what you need to know in order to achieve high quality printing on uncoated stock. I reproduce it here because without this pre-press knowledge producing high-quality jobs successfully on uncoated stock, including colour advertising on newsprint can easily result in bad surprises for all stakeholders in a print job. As the originator of the work it is my responsibility professionally to speak with the printer about who needs to apply the colour profile your print job for the specific press and paper combination it will be running on, and at what stage in production the profiles are to be applied. This succinct reference is an excerpt from my favourite production reference book by Alan Pipes.

Hummer Limos website & brand launch

Superior Hummer Limousines letter replacement logo in two coloursStylish, smooth, glamorous and fun! Superior Hummer Limos was an unforgettable start-up business client entering an already well served market in Christchurch. SHL’s black super-stretch Hummer limousine, the largest of its type in Christchurch, is a real head-turner. The ‘wow!’ factor of the vehicle means that in a sense it launched itself onto the Christchurch market. A strong first impression is good, but a new brand, corporate identity, printed brochure and complementary website forming a comprehensive launch campaign to solidly back up the impressive vehicle is best. The website showcases SHL’s Hummer and their service offerings in attractive and useful ways that have real, long-lasting marketing communications stamina.
