Background

The original artwork was pixel painted by Shaun Waugh back in the early 90s. It was necessary for him to simplify the colour palette of the reference images in order to make the final artwork suitable for hand screenprinting in six colours in the Surface Active back-shed workshop.

The reference photos for the pair of illustrations were shot by renowned New Zealand wildlife photographer Rod Morris.

The original “cut and sew” design of the t-shirt was one that involved printing the garments in cut pieces, this crafty methodology was a co-creation with my design pARTner Chrissie Terpstra, who was also responsible for running our screenprinting workshop at that time. Our local t-shirt manufacturer at the time Global Culture worked with us to enable the bespoke cut and sew method of producing our New Zealand wildlife art shirts.
